Drought-tolerant landscape design in San Clemente, Orange County CA

The short answer

Do not hire us if your drainage runs toward the house, your soil has a structural problem, you need work done next week, or your budget does not match what the property actually needs. We will tell you this on the first call.

We turn down jobs every month. Not because we cannot do the work — because the project is not actually a landscaping problem, and taking the money would not solve it. This post is a summary of the situations where you should call someone else first. If none of these apply, here is what we do.

Your drainage runs toward the house

If water collects against your foundation, runs under your slab, or pools near your garage after rain, no amount of planting or hardscape will fix that. Drainage that moves toward a structure is a civil or structural engineering problem. A beautiful patio that redirects more water toward the same area is not a solution — it is a more expensive version of the same problem.

In this situation, the right first call is a drainage contractor or civil engineer who can assess the grade and design a corrective system. The California State Licensing Board has a public lookup tool if you need to verify a contractor's licence before hiring. Once the drainage is resolved, we can talk about what the hardscape and landscape looks like on top of it. We have worked alongside drainage contractors on several Orange County properties and are happy to coordinate, but we will not quote you the landscape job while the water problem exists.

Your soil or slope has a structural problem

Hillside properties in Laguna Beach, San Clemente, and Coto de Caza sometimes have slope stability issues that go beyond planting and erosion control. If there are signs of soil movement — cracking hardscape, leaning fences, areas that have shifted noticeably after rain — that needs a geotechnical assessment before anything else happens.

We can install drought-tolerant planting and erosion-control groundcover on stable slopes, and those do help. The California Geological Survey maintains publicly accessible hazard maps if you want to understand your site's classification. But on a slope that is actively moving, planting is cosmetic. The structural issue needs to be addressed first. We will tell you this on the walkthrough rather than take the job and hope for the best.

Your budget doesn't match your scope

This one comes up more than any other. A client wants a full front and backyard remodel — new planting, DG pathways, irrigation, outdoor lighting — with a budget that covers maybe 40% of the work. We do not scale the design down and deliver something that looks underfunded. We also do not do phase one and disappear before phase two gets funded.

If the budget does not match what the property needs, we will say so on the proposal call. We can help you think through what to prioritize first and what holds up well until phase two. But we will not take your deposit on a scope we know we cannot deliver for the number on the table.

You need it done in the next two weeks

We are typically booked four to eight weeks out for new installs and design-build projects. If you have a hard deadline — a real estate listing going live, a family event, a contractor handoff date — you need to tell us that upfront. If the timeline cannot work, we will tell you on the first call rather than put you in the queue and miss the date.

For emergency situations like storm damage or a broken irrigation main, we do try to respond quickly. But full installs and remodels have lead times. Planning around them is easier than working around them.

When we are the right call

We are the right call when you want a landscape that looks good in five years, not just in the photos from install day. When you want the same crew showing up on the same day every week, not a rotating cast. When you want a proposal with a fixed number and no surprises on the invoice. When you want someone who will tell you if the project does not make sense before you spend money on it.

Residential maintenance, design and remodeling, hardscape — we do all of it in-house, with a crew that has been working together for years on the coast. Take a look at some of the work we have done across Orange County. If you are not sure whether your project is a fit, call us. We will give you a straight answer.

FAQ

Will you refer me to someone else if you turn down the job?

Where we can. If the issue is drainage or structural, we work with contractors in Orange County we trust and will connect you if it is helpful. We do not have referral arrangements — we just point you toward people who will do the job right.

What if I'm not sure whether my project is a fit?

Call or email us. Walk-throughs are free. We come out, look at the property, and tell you honestly what we see — including whether it is the right time to hire us or whether something else needs to happen first. No sales pressure on the call.

Do you charge for estimates?

No. Walk-throughs and written proposals are free for properties in Orange County. If something requires engineering or a specialist assessment before we can quote it, we will tell you that upfront.

What if the project is partly in your scope and partly not?

We will scope what we can do and be specific about what needs another contractor first. On projects that require coordination — drainage work before hardscape, for example — we can manage the sequence and work alongside other contractors once the structural work is done.

Sea's Edge Landscape — if the job is not the right fit, we will tell you on the call. Walk-throughs are free and there is no hard sell.
